Like perhaps no other crime, theft offenses are crimes of opportunity and thieves are opportunists.  Theft, Robbery and Burglary reports are some of the most frequent types of incidents the police department responds to, 409 as of mid November or approximately 5% of our total calls are theft related.  Many of the cases we investigate would not have taken place if people had taken steps to protect themselves.   Here are some simple things you can do to protect your self from being targeted by a thief.  As simple as some of these things sound, I am always amazed at how many people get victimized because they didn't protect themselves!!!

DON'T BE NAIVE

Crime is a real problem, and, IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR

Don't assume the police know everyone in your neighborhood, no one knows your neighborhood like you, if something or someone seems suspicious:  CALL THE POLICE, ITS OUR JOB TO INVESTIGATE.

LOCK YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS AT HOME

In urban settings daytime burglars will many times prey upon homes they find unlocked.

LEAVE A LIGHT ON

Night time burglars operate at night because they prefer the cover of darkness.  A home with an exterior light can make a world of difference to a crook who wants to use darkness to conceal his crime.

LOCK YOUR CAR DOORS

Theft from vehicles is an absolute crime of opportunity, and is absolutely PREVENTABLE!

IF YOU DON'T WANT YOUR PURSE OR WALLET STOLEN

Don't leave it sitting on the front seat of your car!!!

DON'T LEAVE CREDIT CARDS AND CHECKBOOKS IN PUBLIC AREAS

It takes about 5 seconds for someone to take your credit card from your purse or wallet, it can take you months or even years to undo the damage to your finances and credit.

GET AN ALARM SYSTEM.

There are hundreds of things you can do to make you and your family less attractive targets to would be thieves, these are just a     few.....
