DARE is instructed to fifth grade students at the
Dunmore Elementary Center, St. Mary’s Elementary
school.
DARE is an important community partnership program that helps police,
schools and
families to prevent drug and alcohol abuse.
The D.A.R.E. curriculum is taught by Full-Time
Dunmore police officers whose training and
experience gives them the background needed to answer
the sophisticated questions often posed by young
students about drugs and crime. Prior to entering
the D.A.R.E. program, officers undergo 80 hours of
intensive training at the Pennsylvania D.A.R.E.
Academy in Elizabethtown Pa. The training
covers areas such as child development, classroom
management, teaching techniques, and communication
skills. In addition to the Pa D.A.R.E.
requirement, departmental guidelines stipulate that
its D.A.R.E. officers must have a minimum of 5yrs
Full-Time experience, have an excellent work history
and be crime prevention practitioners.
In addition to the elementary D.A.R.E.
curriculum, officers are trained in the D.A.R.E.
middle school and the G.R.E.A.T.
program.
